MY PERFECT BODYGUARD CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR :PATHS OF REGRETS AND REDEMPTION
Regaining consciousness after succumbing to the effects of tear gas, Linda opens her eyes to find herself in a completely unfamiliar location, unmistakably not Gloria's basement.
Awakening on the bed, Linda scans the room, her eyes not fully open. As she stands and makes her way to the door, she is almost startled to find Richard serving food on plates at the dining table. The sight overwhelms her with emotion, rendering her speechless – Richard, against all odds, came for her.
After a few moments of silent contemplation, Linda finally breaks the quietude. "Richard, I can't believe it's you," she expresses, her voice filled with astonishment. Richard, turning at the sound of her voice, responds casually, "Hey, your food is ready," a statement that leaves Linda somewhat puzzled. She expected a more enthusiastic reaction from Richard upon seeing her again.
As Linda sits down to eat, Richard places a medicine on the table. "Take this after eating; it will help cleanse your system from any smoke that entered your body," he states without much emotion, a demeanor that unsettles Linda. Choosing not to address it, she proceeds to consume her meal – eggs, bread, and tea – in silence.
Having finished her meal and taken the medicine, Linda realizes that Richard is no longer in the house. Stepping outside, she spots him by the ocean banks, lost in his own thoughts. Curiosity guiding her actions, she brings a chair to join Richard, silently seeking to understand the thoughts weighing on his mind.
Seating herself beside Richard, Linda ponders how to express her gratitude. "Thanks for saving my life. I mean, this isn't the first time you've done that, but saving me at that point meant a lot to me," she conveys.
Richard, with a composed demeanor, responds, "You don't have to thank me."
"Why shouldn't I? You're the only one who actually cares a lot about me, and I'm happy that you're here and alive," Linda insists.
"Care about you? I don't know where that's coming from. I'm just following your dad's orders, and if not for him, I wouldn't be helping you in the first place," Richard states with a straight face.
Linda, refusing to believe his words, asserts, "That's a lie. You care about me, don't you?"
"No, I don't," Richard asserts. "And stop forcing words on me."
Feeling a sense of regret, Linda apologizes, "I'm really sorry, Richard. I knew you were looking out for me. It was I who was so selfish, and I will keep regretting it until the day I die." Her words carry a genuine sense of remorse.
"You don't have to regret anything. What you did had a good impact on my life; it made me know my place and stick to it," Richard shares. "And I'm glad you did that."
Perplexed, Linda responds, "What do you mean, Richy? You belong by my side."
"Your side? To help you fulfill your own dream, to help you take back your dad's company, and then dispose of me like garbage," Richard states coldly, revealing his perception of the situation.
"Richard, what do you mean? I would never dispose of you like garbage. And I also wanted to tell you that I am no longer interested in the company. I realize the mistake I made, and I know that if I had listened to you and if I hadn't been too aggressive, maybe by now we could have been together, happy. I am sorry for the delay, but I think we have a lot of time," Linda confesses, extending her hand and placing it in Richard's lap. Her words carry a sense of sincerity and regret, expressing her desire for a different path forward.
"What do you mean, a lot of time?" Richard questions, his gaze fixed on Linda. Linda, earnestly sharing her vision, suggests, "The both of us, we just travel to another country. You and I can start over, get married, and have kids. You know, start a new life or something."
Richard, visibly surprised, raises concerns about his mom and Cynthia. Linda reassures him, "They can come as well. Of course, they can come. Them being here will risk their lives too."
Staring at Linda in disbelief, Richard stands up, attempting to calm himself. Linda, sensing tension, asks, "Did I say anything wrong?" The air becomes charged with uncertainty as they grapple with the implications of this unexpected proposition.
"Do you remember what you told me that day at the hotel before you walked into Gloria's trap?" Richard asks. Linda, with tears in her eyes, admits, "I don't remember."
"You said that if I had something worth fighting for, I should have related to you, but I don't. Do you know how much I reminisce on those words? Believe me, I think about it every day," Richard confesses. "While I'm with this girl, helping her fight her battles and retake what she lost, when I had a family who needed me. At first, I thought I was just following my dream to become a protector, but it turned out I was just in love with you. That's why I fought so hard, went through all this. My dad is dead, making me automatically the man of the house. My mom and sister needed me most, but I chose to be with you, just to hear you say I had nothing worth fighting for," he reveals.
As Linda stands up in tears, Richard expresses, "I'm really sorry. I was just desperate then. Believe me, I wasn't in my right mind," Linda says, seeking understanding and reconciliation. The complexity of emotions in this moment adds depth to their relationship.
"Whether you were in your right mind or not, it doesn't matter. All I have to say is that you were right. I need to find something – a life worth fighting for. But before I do that, I have to take Gloria out of that company. I mean, she's too bad to be around people. We don't know who she will kill next," Richard declares. "Someone needs to stop her. I will get your company back for you, but this time I will do it alone and do it my way. Then, I'm done."
Linda, overwhelmed with emotions, bursts into tears and cries her eyes out. "I'm sorry, but I need a life I can fight for. I wish there was another way," Richard says as he goes inside, leaving Linda to grapple with the harsh reality of their situation. The narrative takes a poignant turn as the characters confront their own paths and the sacrifices they must make.
